Do you know that honey is good for your health, but also beneficial for your hair?
For a long time, honey has been used as a natural way to improve hair health.
It can help hydrate and nourish your hair. Moreover, it promotes hair growth, prevents dryness and frizz.
In this blog post, I will discuss 7 reasons why you should use honey for hair growth.
Furthermore, I will include some tips on how to get the most out of this natural ingredient.
So let’s read on…
“Some people have called honey a remedy rediscovered.”
– Peter Molan, PhD, professor of biochemistry and director of Honey Research Unit, N.Z.
History of honey
Honey has been a sweetener for as long as we’ve had written records. People have used it since 2100 B.C. The ancient world is always a source of inspiration when it comes to beauty.
Cleopatra and Queen Anne
We can look back into recorded history to find that Cleopatra used honey. She used it as an ingredient in her recipes centuries before Queen Anne (1665 – 1714).
It was reported that Queen Ann also used secret ingredients like honey and olive oil to stimulate hair growth.
What is honey?
Honey contains traces of B vitamins and minerals. Including calcium, copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, potassium, sodium and zinc.
It’s been claimed that honey in some types has hydrogen peroxide. It aids in healing cuts and scrapes by disinfecting them.
Finally, some honeys have propolis, a bee secretions with antibacterial and antiseptic qualities.
All these benefits make honey a possible treatment for boosting hair growth.
Benefits of Honey for hair
The natural sweetener is packed with nutrients. These are beneficial for hair follicles and promote healthy hair growth.
I put together some tips on the benefits of honey for hair, and answer some common questions.
Can honey dry hair?
No way!
Many people desire honey hair growth. But not everyone understands how to treat their hair with honey.
Honey is a natural humectant, meaning it helps hair keep moisture. This makes honey an excellent conditioner for dry hair.
Yes, honey can hydrate hair. When honey is applied to the scalp and hair, it helps seal in moisture and hydrates the hair shaft.
This can help prevent frizziness and dryness, and can make your hair look healthier.
It reduces dandruff and promotes scalp health.
Natural honey also has anti-inflammatory properties. This means it can help soothe scalp conditions like dandruff and eczema.
Another well-known benefit of honey is its ability to promote hair growth.
Honey as a sweetener contains B vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. All of which are essential for building healthy hair follicles.
It’s antibacterial properties can help kill harmful bacteria on the scalp. If the bacteria is not removed, it may inhibit hair growth.
Is honey good for your hair?
There is no definitive answer to this question. As honey’s effects on hair growth may vary depending on the individual.
Yet, some people believe honey can help promote hair growth. This is due to its antibacterial and antioxidant properties.
If you want to try honey for hair growth, start by mixing one tablespoon of honey with two tablespoons of water.
Apply the mixture to your scalp and massage gently for a few minutes. Leave the honey in your hair for about half an hour, before rinsing it out with warm water.
Repeat this process once or twice a week to get the best result.
This is like the way lemon juice can lighten hair. If you are looking to lighten your hair, using honey and lemon together might be a good option for you.
Lightening hair with honey and lemon
Here is how you do it:
Mix together equal parts of honey and lemon juice. Then work the mixture through your hair. Allow it to sit for 20 minutes before rinsed out with warm water (no shampoo).
After rinsing, you can follow up with a conditioner if desired. If you have light colored hair, this will likely not do much other than brighten it slightly. The more porous your hair, the more dramatic the results might be.
I recommend doing any lightening on bleached or highlighted hair. Rather than dark brown or black color treated hair, as these colors tend to be resistant to fading.
How to make a honey hair mask at home
Here are some bee’s honey hair mask recipes using all natural ingredients
Coconut milk and honey
Ingredients:
One tablespoon of honey
Half a cup of coconut milk
Instructions: In a mixing bowl, combine the honey and coconut milk until smooth.
Coat your hair with the mixture, rubbing it into every strand. Allow the mask to sit for around 30 minutes before rinsing with warm water.
Shampoo and condition as usual. This treatment is effective if done once a week only.
Benefits: Both honey and coconut milk are recognized for their hair benefits. The sweet fluid helps with moisture retention in the hair. It’s antioxidant properties help prevent scalp infections like dandruff or eczema.
With a low pH level, honey smooths rough damaged areas on each hair strand by sealing the shaft’s cuticle.
Coconut milk has fatty acids that nourish damaged hair, while also moisturizing dry scalps.
This honey mask will help repair damaged strands by deeply conditioning them. At the same time softening tresses, thanks to both ingredients’ smoothing abilities.
The result? Silky hair you’ll love to show off!
Olive oil and honey hair treatment:

Two egg yolks

Spread the mixture to your hair, making sure to coat every strand.

I am bookmarking so that I can try the treatments! I have never tried Honey for my hair.
I never realized that honey was good for your hair and all the benefits that it provides. So interesting. I am actually in need of something to help with dandruff and who doesn’t want hair growth. I know I do!
Wow this was a very knowledgeable read I must say. I have a few questions, I’ve had locs for almost 10 years and I’m always searching for new ways to keep them healthy. I’ve run into a few problems with keeping my hair moisturized, so when I saw that honey seals it in, it intrigued me. How exactly would a routine with honey go for my hair type and could I also use the honey mixtures such as the cinnamon and honey (etc.)? are there any steps I should add or not do?
Hi Mekhi, thank you for your review and questions.
It sounds like you’re on the right track with using honey to keep your hair moisturized!
I recommend starting by applying a good amount of raw honey to damp locks before bedtime, then covering them with a satin scarf or shower cap.
Do this every night until you feel your hair is fully saturated (usually about 1-2 weeks).
Once your locks are well hydrated, use less honey each time–it can be applied as needed during the day when it feels dry.
You may also want to consider adding some cinnamon or other ingredients to create different mixtures for different purposes (such as making an anti-dandruff mixture )
Great post!
I am trying everything with my hair, and I still can’t get to the desired result.
I’ve tried all kinds of shampoo and hair conditioner, liquid and solid and nothing really changes.
I love using natural ingredients for health, so thank you very much for this post.
There are lots of recipes to try, I think I will start with olive oil + honey and see what happens!
Thank youuu
