As much as we want to have a good hair day, sometimes it can be hard to maintain. Can lack of sleep cause hair loss? I will discuss in this post that the lack of sleep can cause hair loss and highlight other related health issues associated with this.
The average person needs about 7-8 hours of sleep a night, but for many people, this is not the case. In fact, according to recent studies by the CDC one-third of adults are getting less than 6 hours of sleep each night.
Studies show that lack of sleep can cause premature ageing and even hair loss. The National Sleep Foundation has determined that “hair loss may be caused by several factors including genetics, illness or medication.” This study also found that people who get only five hours or fewer per night reported an increased incidence of hair loss when compared to those who slept seven to eight hours per night.
Sleep is important for hair growth
Proper sleep is essential to your health and well-being, but did you know that it also affects the quality of your hair?
Lack of sleep releases cortisol, a steroid hormone produced by the adrenal glands, which sit on top of each kidney. When released into the bloodstream, cortisol can help the body respond to stress or danger. It also increases the body’s metabolism of glucose, can causes inflammation in the body resulting in scalp hair falling out, thinning or greying.
Sleep deprivation has been linked with weight gain and obesity as well as diabetes and heart disease. It also increases your risk for depression and anxiety disorders such as PTSD (Post-traumatic Stress Disorder). The lack of sleep leads to impaired judgment and decision-making skills which may lead to accidents at work or home. If you are experiencing any symptoms listed above it is important that you seek medical attention from a doctor immediately! Make sure you get enough sleep every night so your health doesn’t suffer!
Do you have sleep apnea?
Sleep apnea is a serious condition that comes with many unpleasant side effects. Hair loss and thinning are common, as well as heart disease or diabetes. If you notice any of these symptoms in yourself or someone close to you, it’s important to see your doctor immediately for diagnosis and treatment options! There are treatments available for this condition that can help with the symptoms and improve your quality of life. The sooner you seek treatment for sleep apnea, the better off you will be in the long run. You don’t want to put your health at risk because of something so simple as not getting enough sleep!
Do you want to know if anaesthesia can cause hair loss?
Anaesthesia slows down cellular division, which may adversely affect your hair follicles. This has the potential to also cause telogen effluvium, which is potentially temporary hair loss though it’s not clear how much of a risk this poses. It’s unclear whether there is any correlation between anaesthetic and permanent or long-term hair loss. If you’re worried about losing your locks after surgery, talk with your doctor before going under the knife!
Do you know how your sleep position may affect hair growth?
Sleeping on your stomach can cause a lot of tension in the neck and back, which may lead to headaches and soreness. It also places pressure on the scalp, which can result in hair loss. Sleeping on your side is better for both your body and hair.
If you want to keep your head full of beautiful locks, try sleeping with a silk pillowcase or wearing a silk scarf while sleeping. Silk is known for its ability to reduce friction between skin and fabric so it’s perfect for sensitive scalps! Plus, it feels amazing against the skin!
Sleep problems that can affect your overall health
Sleep is a big deal! It’s not just about feeling rested, it’s about your health and well-being too. But there are so many things that can go wrong with sleep – from snoring to insomnia to narcolepsy – and they’re all different. Other factors to consider that can cause sleep problems are:
- Young age / old age
Lack of sleep can cause several health issues, including hair loss. According to WebMD, lack of sleep may lead to hair thinning or even the complete loss of your hair.
Other symptoms include dry and brittle nails, wrinkles in the skin around the eyes and mouth area, weight gain due to poor metabolism from too few deep sleep stages for fat burning during REM cycles (Rapid Eye Movement), an impaired immune system that leaves you more susceptible to colds and illnesses as well as hormonal imbalances which could result in difficulty getting pregnant.
If these signs are evident be sure not only to get enough quality rest but also to make healthy food choices and exercise regularly- this will help counteract any negative effects on your body caused by lack of sleep!
