Some people believe that using essential oils and plant based products to dye your hair is a good idea.
I can validate that claim, as I used essential oils for my greys for more than 2 years.
It is not that straightforward, but there are some things you can do to make your hair colour last longer.
So I want to share my experiences with you and tell you what oils are suitable for different types of hair and skin.
I guess you also want to know whether essential oil can reduce or cover your greys?
I will also provide you with a recipe that is good for your body and grey hair.
You will also learn some basics for choosing the right type of hair dye for your needs.
What are essential oils and how do they work?
Plants play an important role in balancing the ecology of our earth.
We are all connected to plants because it looks after our physical, emotional and spiritual well being.
Every part of the plant, including essential oils, has been used for its medicinal properties since the dawn of time.
Through steam distillation, we extract essential oils from plants, shrubs and seeds.
By extracting this way, the essential oil is concentrated and potent than your normal herbs.
For example, it takes 5,000 pounds of rose petals to produce only 1 kilo of oil!
Essential oils are not a simple substance, but a complex structure of hundreds of different chemicals.
My worry is that essential oils sold in stores today are fake.
They might be adulterated, engineered or mixed with other things to make them smell better than the real thing.
For example, Frankincense is mixed with colourless, odourless solvents, such as dieththy phthalate.
The only way to differentiate authentic and adulterated essential oil is to test it in a lab.
Unfortunately, consumers can’t tell the difference unless they are trained to recognise through smell or simple in-house testing.
The best way to use them for the best results
- Rosemary (Rosmarinus Officinalis)
The use of Rosemary was recorded by Benedictine herbalist Hildegard of Bingen in the 12th century.
Not long later, it was used to disinfect the air in most French hospitals.
Besides known for its excellent medical properties, it is also used in treating hair loss and dandruff.
It is known to darken greys if used over an extended period.
A 2015 study showed that Rosemary is as good as Minoxidil for hair growth.
Using Rosemary on the scalp did not cause any rashes or itchiness compared with Minoxidil.
It is also known to prevent baldness, delaying greying and treating dandruff.
Take 3-5 drops of 100% quality Rosemary essential oil and mixed it in equal parts with olive oil.
Apply the mixture by massaging it onto your scalp for about 2-3 minutes.
Leave it for 3-4 hours before washing your hair with a light shampoo and conditioner.
Do it regularly over some time to get the best result.
Warning: Unfortunately, this application takes time even up to 3 months before you notice any result.
- Sage (Salvia Officinalis)
Sage, also known as a sacred herb by the Romans.
It has excellent medical properties, including antibacterial, antifungal and circulatory stimulants.
It is also rich in antioxidants, various vitamins and minerals.
These nutrients help protect the hair from oxidative damage – the ones that appear in grey hairs.
Mix 2 tablespoons of olive oil and 6 drops of 100% pure Sage essential oil.
Apply the mixture and massage your scalp for 2-3 minutes.
If you want, keep it overnight or wash it off with a light shampoo and conditioner within 1-2 hours. Do this 2-3 times per week.
Do not blow-dry.
Warning: This is not a quick-fix solution, it may take up to 3 months to see results.
- Thyme (Thymus Vulgaris)
Thyme is mentioned in one of the oldest medical records – the Ebers Papyrus dating back to the 16th century BC.
Its medical properties include antiaging, antioxidant, antifungal, and many more.
It is also known for invigorating blood flow to the scalp, and can help hair growth.
Mix 1 tablespoon each of Grapeseed oil and Castor oil with 5-8 drops of Thyme essential oil.
Apply to your scalp by massaging for 2-3 minutes. You may choose to leave it overnight or wash it off with a light shampoo and conditioner.
Try to avoid using a hair blower.
Grapeseed oil may help loosen dead skin and restore moisture caused by dandruff.
Castor oil control hair loss, thicken hairs, boost hair and enhances hair colour.
Warning: You have to be patient, as it may take up to 6-9 weeks before you notice signs of improvement.
Secret recipe to prevent your hair from greying
The recipe for the hair oil is:
Use 7 drops of Cedarwood oil, which will help your hair grow and be healthy.
Mix that with 7 drops of Rosemary oil.
You can also mix in 4 drops of Lavender oil to help the hair grow.
Add a squirt of coconut oil. To top off the bottle, you can use distilled water.
After every shower and before going to bed, put 4 drops of the mixture onto your hands and massage your scalp.
Alternatively, you may want to replace your hair gel with this mixture. In this case, use 4 drops twice daily.
Do this daily and be patient, as this is not a quick-fix solution.
For anything outside your body to work better, you have to care about what is inside your body.
You need to eat healthy, including vegetables and fruits, no smoking, limited alcohol, exercise etc.
This will ensure that what you do inside responds well with what is happening outside your body.
There are many essential oils, such as Patchouli, Peppermint, Chamomile, Jasmine, Lemon and Sandalwood, known to help in hair growth, dandruff and thicken hair.

What to watch out for before undertaking a new hair dye.
Dyes with chemicals potentially can react to your skin and cause an allergic reaction.
This is why I always insist you do a 24-hour patch test for any product you plan to use.
In a recent newspaper report by the Mirror, a woman was left with a blistered scalp and her eyes were swollen shut after using a popular brand of hair dye.
She had a negative result from a patch test she conducted.
Your skin can absorb whatever you apply to it.
This means any toxic chemical from hair dyes can be absorbed by the skin and into your body.
Studies show that chemicals can stay in your body for up to 48 hours.
This is a concern, so I advise you to do your own research before applying any products to your hair or body.
