Let’s face it, nobody wants a reality check!
But sometimes, no matter what you do, your hair seems to break off at the slightest touch.
This can be frustrating, not to mention damaging to your self-esteem.
In this blog post, I will discuss hair breakage, the causes and solutions!
Let’s start with the beginning of the hair cycle or hair growth to understand better.
Hair grows in three cycle phases: anagen, catagen, and telogen.
During the anagen phase, hair grows actively. This phase can last from two to six years.
Catagen is the transitional phase that lasts about two weeks. Telogen is the resting phase, and it lasts about three months.
Normally, about 85% of hair is in the anagen phase, while about two percent are in telogen. The remaining 13% of hair is in catagen.
There are many reasons why your hair may start to break and fall off.
Hair breakage is usually temporary, and it will grow back with proper care and treatment.
Stress can be one of many causes that triggers hair breakage.
While it’s not always possible to end the stress in your life, there are some ways you can manage it.
There are many reasons why your hair may start to thin and break off. Such hair breakage caused by stress is usually temporary.
Your hair will grow back with proper care and treatment.
How to grow your hair back?
This type of hair loss can leave your follicles dormant, and hair strands can break down.
If you suspect stress is the cause, it is important to take steps to control stress levels.
There are different ways to manage stress, and what works for one person may not work for another.
Consider some of these methods of stress relief, such as exercise, meditation, and journaling.
It’s important to find what works best for you, and to make time for yourself every day to relax and de-stress.
Taking care of yourself is nothing but selfish, and it will help you be more productive in all areas of your life.
So take a few minutes each day to relax and unwind, and you’ll see a difference in both your hair health and wellbeing.
Dryness is the number one cause of hair breakage!
When hair is dry, the cuticles are raised and can readily break off from the hair shaft.
There are several causes of dry hair, such as the following:
- frequent washing with shampoo
- using products with hash chemicals
- styling with excessive heat
Many people with Afro and curly hair have a harder time keeping their hair moisturized.
This is because their natural oils do not travel down the shaft of their strands as easily as other types of hair.
Thus, women with type four curls need to use an extra layer of moisture into their hair care routine.
One way to do this is by using the LOC or LCO method.
LCO stands for Liquid, Cream, Oil and refers to the order in which products should apply to hair.
Use water-based products
Another way to increase moisture is to use water-based rather alcohol-based products.
Alcohol can dry hair out, but water-based products work to hydrate hair and seal in moisture.
Having your hair down
By having your hair down, it’s another cause that leads to hair breakage.
This is because it exposes your hair to the elements like dust and dirt. All these environmental elements can cause friction to your hair.
Moreover, wearing your hair down can also cause damage to your hair cuticle.
Besides, the cuticle is the outermost layer of the hair shaft, and when it’s damaged, it can lead to hair breakage.
That’s why it’s important to wear a protective style.
This will help protect your hair from any potential damage.
Dry & brittle hair conditioner
Another way to prevent hair breakage is by using a conditioner for dry and brittle hair.
Furthermore, conditioners can help prevent hair breakage. It’s done by coating the hair follicles with a protective layer of protein.
As a result, it keeps your hair from easily breaking off.
Try not to use conditioners containing toxic chemicals, as they can damage your hair cuticle.
Instead, use safe products like milk, hair oil and butter, which are all natural. This will help repair and nourish your hair.
However, if you’re experiencing a lot of hair breakage, it might be a good idea to see a hair stylist for a haircut.
Reason being, a haircut can remove split ends and damaged hair. As well as help reduce hair breakage.
When it comes to hair damage, heat is a major problem. The cortex is exposed to damage and moisture loss when the cuticles are lifted.
Heat styling, in particular, tends to cause fractures, if you have tight curls.
Now that you know the reasons, avoid blow dryers and straighteners, if possible. Instead, let your hair air dry.
If you must use a blow dryer, keep the temperature low and avoid pointing it at your head.
Direct sun light
Sun exposure can also harm your hair. In addition, if you have curls or coarse hair, it is prone to frizz and dryness.
Then sun exposure will definitely make it worse.
One way to avoid the sun’s damaging rays is by wearing a hat or using a UV protectant on your hair.
Another possibility is over-processing. This is frequently treating your hair with chemical products.
Such as perms, relaxers and hair dyeing, which can lead to damaging healthy hair growth.
So to prevent further hair breakage, take the following precautions:

My advice is that regardless of your final decision, consult your healthcare professional first.
Washing hair incorrectly
Many people take it for granted that they know how to wash their hair the correct way. But, you could be washing your hair the wrong way!
Washing too often: For healthy hair growth, it is important not to wash your hair daily.
You may use conditioner on your hair to avoid removing the sheen if you wash your scalp daily. However, it removes filthy particles while maintaining the health of your roots.
So if you want to keep your hair healthy, clean it every other day to maintain moisture and sheen.
Likewise, over-washing can lead to hair breakage and stripping your hair’s natural oil.
Washing with hot water: Hot water can dry out the scalp and damage the hair cuticles.
This makes the strands brittle and prone to breakage. Always use lukewarm or cold water while washing your hair, as it is healthy for the scalp.
Using too much shampoo: Using more shampoo does not mean it will clean your hair roots better.
In fact, it removes all dirt from your scalp, but also leaves the strands dry and brittle.
Conditioning, oiling and combing
Not conditioning the hair: It is important to condition your locks after every wash. Because it helps repair any damage to your hair while shampooing.
Also, it helps seal in the moisture and makes the strands shiny
Not detangling the hair: If you don’t comb your long locks before washing, it can tangle and break off.
So, before shampooing, always use a comb to untangle your strands.
This will prevent breakage, as well as healthy growth of shiny hair.
Oiling hair before a wash: Oiling your hair before a wash is an age-old trick to healthy hair.
Use natural oils from coconut, olives, and almonds, which are rich in vitamins and moisture.
They provide the roots with rich nutrients and soothe the dry scalp.
By all means, massage these oils to your scalp at least once a week.
Keep the oils onto your scalp for at least an hour before shampooing your hair.
Rubbing the scalp strongly: This will do more damage to roots and weaken healthy strands.
This will make them brittle, likely to break, and shed in large amounts.
The right way is to massage shampoo gently on your scalp, without tugging at it too much.
Towel drying is irregular
The average person dries their entire head in about 15 seconds.
That’s not enough time for the water to evaporate, which can lead to frizz and breakage.
When you’re done showering, gently squeeze excess water from your hair. Then wrap your hair in a towel.
Next, let the towel sit on your head for a few minutes. This will allow the towel to absorb all moisture.
Now, squeeze the towel to absorb any remaining water.
Finally, you can remove your towel.
Cotton vs microfiber towel
When you dry your hair with a regular cotton towel, all that rubbing creates friction.
This results in tiny flakes sticking together to form a clump called a “turban”.
While microfiber towels have finer fibers than ordinary cotton. Hence, they are kinder on your hair and don’t create as much frizz or breakage.
Other qualities are that these towels are super absorbent and can dry your hair faster.
Microfiber towels are the healthy alternative to towel drying.
Another option would be a turban towel. These come in different colors and styles.
So if you wanted to quick wrap your hair after washing, a turban towel would do the trick.
Whether you’re using microfiber towels or turban towels, avoid cotton towel drying altogether!
I am sure this is a simple solution for anyone.
Regular hair cuts
Another reason for hair breakage is a lack of frequent haircuts.
When hair is allowed to grow out, the ends can become damaged and split.
These broken ends make the hair more likely to break higher up, nearer the hair shaft.
This is why it’s important for people who are growing their hair out to get regular haircuts.
This will help keep the hair healthy and strong.
If you are unsure, consult any hairstylist to help you preserve healthy hair and deal with any issues.
A healthy lifestyle will benefit your hair and skin health. Therefore, adequate nutrients in your diet are critical for healthy growth.
Ensure you get at least five servings of fruits and vegetables per day. At the same time, avoid sugary foods and unhealthy fats.
There are a few specific nutrients essential for healthy hair growth.
They include the following:
- Vitamin C
- Omega-3 fatty acid
- Vitamin D
If you aren’t getting enough of these nutrients in your diet, a supplement may be beneficial.
