This is exactly what happened to me. I am lucky; because I saw my first gray hair early.

I had the choice of dyeing or embracing my silver strands.

I was unsure what to do. But in the end, I decided that whatever it takes to keep my gray hair healthy and looking good is what I need to do.

Here are my best 7 graying hair care hacks for making your hair look fabulous!

The right hair style

Hair style is key to make natural grey hair look its best.

Whether you have long or short hair, maintaining healthy and stylishly groomed is key.

Here are some 6 tips to help you:

  1. Avoid cuts that are short. A short hair style eliminates the growing stage in the natural gray hair cycle. This can cause hair to become thin and weak.
  2. Choose styles that are easy to manage. Short hair won’t weigh down your healthy hair, giving it more body and structure.
  3. If you have curly hair, avoid using too much heat styling tools. Curly hair can be difficult to manage, but using the right products can help.
  4. If you have straight natural hair, use a large round brush and a flat iron to style your hair.
  5. If you choose dyed hair, use low volume peroxide and ash tones to avoid brassy tones.
  6. Keep your hair trimmed frequently to avoid split ends and promote healthy growth.

Consider your hair texture

Gray hair looses melamin, the natural pigment that gives hair colour.

As a result, your grays can often look transparent, colourless and white.

For some, their natural gray hair can be coarse and wiry

If you have this type of hair texture, it is important to blend the gray hair with the natural color of your scalp.

If you do wash your hair, use moisturising shampoo.

If you have dry hair, use a clarifying shampoo once a week. This is to remove environmental pollutants and product build-up.

Specialized best shampoos

Gray hair can be dry and brittle, so you need a specialized shampoo that will maintain the shine and luster of your hair.

There are many shampoos on the market specifically for gray hair.

Try one of these shampoos and give it a few weeks to see the full results. If you’re not happy, move on to another until you’ve found the right fit.

For best results, remember to always follow up with a conditioner tailored for gray hair.

Use a moisturising hair mask

You don’t have to buy expensive hair products for this purpose.

You can make a moisturizing hair mask at home. Try mixing one beaten egg yolk with 2 tablespoons of olive oil and a three-quarter cup of plain yogurt.

Apply this mask to your hair and leave it on for 15 minutes, before shampooing and rinsing with cold water.

Avoid silicone and dimethicone

Avoid moisturizing shampoo that contains silicone and dimethicone.

As it can add weight to your hair down, as it affects your hair volume.

Try a purple shampoo

When it comes to gray hair, purple shampoo is the best toner.

That’s because it eliminates brassiness caused by heat styling, UV light, and other environmental pollutants.

I am recommending purple shampoo, because it is opposite from yellow on the color wheel. This means it can help counteract unwanted yellow tones in gray hair.

Avoid blue or green shampoo

Unlike purple shampoo, blue and green shampoos are not designed for gray hair

Green is opposite red on the color wheel, which means, it neutralizes unwanted reddish tones in gray hair.

Blue shampoo is made to counterbalance unwanted yellow or brassy tones in brown hair; it will make your gray hair look dull and green

Don’t you dare pluck those gray hairs!

There’s a good reason why you shouldn’t pluck out your grays. It has nothing to do with the old wives tale you’ve been taking as truth.

It’s a myth that grey hairs will grow back thicker or that there will be more of them.

The pace of greying is multi-factorial and genetically determined.

Gray hair will regenerate from the same follicle (where the lack of pigment stems from).

Plucking often injures the follicle, resulting in it not producing hair.

So if you’re tempted to rid yourself of your grays, think again!

Sleep on satin pillows

Hair experts say sleeping on a satin pillowcase is one of the easiest ways to protect your hair.

Satin creates less friction than other materials. And it won’t absorb the oils from your hair and scalp like cotton will.

This helps keep your hair follicles healthy, and your hair looking shiny and vibrant.
